Yesterday, while speaking to a consultant, I was stuck by something that he said and decided to delve deeper. The deeper we got, the more intrigued I became. Finally, I asked him whom he consulted with. He said the Military. I asked him what he consulted about? He said, efficiency.
Nice.
Well as a jr. futurist (I was sitting next to a Real Futurist) and this guy sitting across from us was obviously the real deal, so I had to ask him about the future from a seasonal perspective. Quickly, I laid out the seasonal theory of history to him, and he followed what I was saying. Then I explained why I thought we were in a new Winter. (The last being the great depression and WWII.). He smiled and nodded his head. Next, I asked him THE question:
What will winter look like 10 years from now. In, say, 2017?
His response was drawn, measured and…scary.
“Religious holy war.”
Over the next few minutes, the consultant explained to me how pervasive Islam is in this country and the west (more Muslims work at *O’Hare International Airport than Christians – and more foreigners work there than Americans.) He explained how quickly the religion of peace can flip to homicidal suicide when radical Islamists manipulate true believers’ thinking.
He said it doesn’t take much; in the hands of a skilled proselytizer the meekest soul can become a fundamentalist.
He told me to expect attacks on American soil. And to expect it from the unexpected. School buses and tanker trucks, on-ramps and interchanges. The same thing that doomed us on 9/11 is still our greatest weakness: Our open society. Who is driving that truck? Who is checking your luggage? What do they believe? This is the nature of the problem.
Right now the professional terrorist are busy in Iraq. It’s the armatures that are organizing and they area already here.
I walked away from the table wondering if all spooks were this depressing, hoping that he got the wrong call. This morning I woke to the news that the FBI arrested six “Islamic radicals” four from Yugoslavia, one from Jordon and one from Turkey) last night, for an alleged plot to kill soldiers at Fort Dix, several federal officials said.
Hmmm, so much for wishful thinking, right?
