The Phone is Ringing... Who's ready to Lead?
STATEMENT BY JOHN MCCAIN ON RUSSIA’S AGGRESSION IN GEORGIA
ARLINGTON, VA – U.S. Senator John McCain issued the following
statement regarding the current conflict between Georgia and Russia:
“Today, news reports indicate that Russian military forces crossed an
internationally-recognized border into the sovereign territory of
Georgia. Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its
military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian
territory. What is most critical now is to avoid further confrontation
between Russian and Georgian military forces. The consequences for
Euro-Atlantic stability and security are grave."
“The government of Georgia has called for a cease-fire and for a resumption of direct talks on South Ossetia with international mediators. The U.S. should immediately convene an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to call on Russia to reverse course. The U.S. should immediately work with the EU and the OSCE to put diplomatic pressure on Russia to reverse this perilous course it has chosen. We should immediately call a meeting of the North Atlantic Council to assess Georgia’s security and review measures NATO can take to contribute to stabilizing this very dangerous situation. Finally, the international community needs to establish a truly independent and neutral peacekeeping force in South Ossetia.”
Obama statement:
“I
strongly condemn the outbreak of violence in Georgia, and urge an
immediate end to armed conflict. Now is the time for Georgia and Russia
to show restraint, and to avoid an escalation to full scale war.
Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected. All sides should
enter into direct talks on behalf of stability in Georgia, and the
United States, the United Nations Security Council, and the
international community should fully support a peaceful resolution to
this crisis.”
Without looking at the pictures, even my 14 year old son could tell who said what!
One statement is detailed, specific, informative and direct. It names the aggressor, calls for measures and lays out a direct course of action. The other is vague, nonspecific, uninformed and naive. It calls for peace for peace's sake... through negotiations... talk.
Peaceful negotiations.
Meanwhile, Georgia (a Democracy) is getting its ass kicked by an ex-super power that still packs a superior punch. Russia is on the move...again.
The "O" on Obama stands for oblivious.
Fun and games are over. My mind is made up. I have climbed off the wall and am headed into camp.
Hope and Change in the face of naked aggression yields... naked aggression.
Putin vs. Obama? World over.
Good for you, James. I have decided to support Sen. McCain as well, even though I don't agree with him on everything. But I will sleep better at night with a President McCain at the helm. He gets it on security, plain and simple.

Uhhhnnnhhh....
Obama may be a twit, but how, exactly, would McC enforce his 'suggestions'?
More US troops?
And where, exactly, will THEY come from?
Remember that the US encouraged ethnic rebellion--specifically, in Kosovo.
Now we're against them?
Beware Permanent War, which has given rise to more dictatorships than any other formula known.

Not that I would support sending U.S. troops but how about we take some from Germany, S. Korea, or Japan? It seems we haven't fought wars there in decades yet we still have a HUGE military presence there.

This might not be the most significant thing of all time, but, as it tends to be with Obama, pair THIS reaction with his past statements (bringing down military innovation, etc.) and you get a real picture.

Stating that it is time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint shows a phenominal lack of knowledge of the situation. Georgia has shown nothing but restraint in their efforts to resolve this situation (of course, according to Putin, Russia is just protecting her people who live in the disputed territories)which has been going on for months. It is Russia who needs to have shown restraint to a much smaller neighbor who they have cornered by geography. Obama needs to attend a few more meetings/discussions in the Senate so that he can be brought up to speed on what is going on in the world (or just read the paper).

James T.
I'm recalling your post a few weeks ago when some punk threw a rock through your window. Do you think he was interested in you going outside to negotiate and talk, striving for peace?
Nope. There are times when words can only follow actions.

Georgia: "restrained"?
You ask for a suspension of disbelief, and I'm not going to give you that.
Shaak'li is a loose cannon. He's playing the victim-card, after having been caught shelling South Ossetian cities. (Not that he was alone; South Ossetians have shelled Georgian cities, too.)
But pulling the whiskers of The Bear, getting the reaction that nature demands, and then running home to Mommy--calling on the US to "save me"?
I think the best course for the US is to get Shaak'li out of office.
